SPS has been used successfully to synthesize a wide range of FGM/Bulk materials with three to eight intermediate mixed layers, including ZrO2/SUS, ZrO2/TiAl, ZrO2/Ni, Al2O3/SUS, Al2O3/Ti, WC/SUS, WC/Co, WC/Ni, Cu/SUS, glass/SUS, Al/polyimide resin and Cu/polyimide resin materials. All were sintered in ten to twenty minutes after the start of the process.

This new ultrahard FGM features a graded cobalt concentration for both high tip and high base toughness.

SPS was used for the successful manufacture of a functionally graded compact composed of nine intermediate layers with different volume fractions and two 100% layers on the front and back surfaces. This compact was free of fissures, warping and inter-layer separation or microcracks. Total processing time was 58 minutes, including 28 minutes for temperature rise, 5 minutes temperature holding and 25 minutes for cooling.
